finding out more - google gone crazy?

If you ever want to find out more about a website I recommend looking at the robots.txt and the sitemap.xml

You can usually find these files in the root of the site

for example:

domain.com/robots.txt

and

domain.com/sitemap.xml

I find it fun doing this for the likes of google.com and yahoo as you can often (not so much anymore) get a sneak peak at whats coming, or find yourself some easter eggs.

I did some investigating last night on google.com and found these tidbits:

In March this year, Google aquired Trendalyzer.

From this news article I found the tool Gapminder which is great fun to play with.

It shows you comparative statistics around the world.

I don’t yet know where they have gotten the stats from.

I also found these crazy search pages:

Google bork search. I think this is a tribute to the Swedish chef

Google piglatin

Google hacker search

Google klingon

Check them out, they are hillarious if not pointless.

enjoy your website snooping

  1. Google piglatin – genius. If only it rendered the sites into igpay atinlay.

And Gapminder is actually quite cool, but some of the info is missing for certain countries. It’d be interesting to know where it comes from. Census records? ‘Official’ government stats?

  2. I enjoyed playing with GapMinder too.
I found it strange to see that the virgin Isles (US territory) is the largest producer of carbon emissions per capita since its stats began.
